Habeas Corpus

Tuesday, October 17th 2006 we lost half of our Bill of Rights and the essential right of Habeas Corpus. Habeas has been part of our law since way before our constitution was written. It dates back to the year 1215 when some English lords confronted King John on the fields of Runny-mead and forced him to sign the Magna Carta. Basically, it's the law that allows you to ask "Hey, why am I in jail?"
On Wednesday, our local paper, the Ithaca Journal reported that Bush had signed this bill into law. The headline was not above the fold. The type size was much smaller than other more important local news. The media is largely responsible for the mess we find ourselves in. I have enough faith in the goodness and wisdom of the people to believe that we would not have elected these evil men to positions of power, had we been better informed. Most of us get our news from the television, and the coverage of this has been very poor there as well. Keith Olberman is the only person on the tube that seems to really get it. If you don't watch tv (I don't) then watch him on YouTube.
